Day 2 Reflection ppt
June 24, 2008 by writingwithtechnology
What was the most important thing I learned today? What did you learn that will fit best in your classroom for 2008? How do you plan to use it in your classroom?
Good luck to all in the 2008/2009 school year.

I learned about taking parts of things and creating a poem out of them. I also learned about expressing myself through a powerpoint 3-voice that I think could be kind of fun if I remember how to do it later on. I believe I am going to use the found poem in the classroom this year especially with the reading class I am going to teach in order to get them to relate their lives with the book. Anything that has to do with reading I am a fan of and want to get the kids to do it.
The most important thing I learned today is how it feels to be a student again. I like actually going through the process of writing so I know what my students will encounter and how they will feel while writing. I think I’m going to try a word jar in class this year. I need to think about it some more, but something will come out of that. I would also like to try a found poem this fall with the Kingdomes unit. I have a bunch of books that the kids could use. This next year will be a challenge for us with all the changes we will face. I picked up a few more tools for my toolbox to help make it a successful year.
I learned the process for a found poem, I think I will use this in my classroom this year to accompany some chapters in my text. I think the kids would love this, I’m very interested in some time trying a triatic writing I would love to do one over my dad’s experience with Parkinson’s Disease, I have thought about this for a few years now, but I haven’t been able to put it in words yet, maybe someday. I would also like to try using a word jar, I think I could even use this for my elementary kids when they finish up a project. they can draw a word from the jar and write and or draw what comes to mind.
I was suprised that I could come up with a found poem from using a “Non-designers design” textbook! And I actually somewhat like it. I think I may try to do this in a computers course and in my keyboarding course.
Getting students to enjoy writing is something we all struggle with. Hopefully by doing some of these creative activities along with incorporating technology, they will learn to appreciate it and like to write.
Today I was reintroduced to the “found poem” idea. And oddly enough I was able to create a poem called “The Union” using lines from an elementary text book entitled “Meet the Great Composers”. I used lines from the biographies of Robert Schumann and Clara (Wieck) Schumann and also incorporated titles of their compositions into the piece. This would be a great way to end a composer unit. It would especially work well with composers who were connected in some way, either by style, time period, or comradarie.
The found poem was very interesting to me. I am not creative at all, but I was able to create one. Again since I’m not in the classroom regularly, I don’t see where I would use it. I do have a couple of small groups and mentoring groups that I conduct through out the year and I might try and incorporate this strategies. Allowing plenty of work time was great for me. I have created three PowerPoints that I will use next year during my parent nights and workshops.
I learned new ways to help the students learn vocabulary. I like the idea of a word pool and the found poems. These might be great activities for my social studies classes when I have a substitute or between units. This has empowered me to be more creative and to use powerpoint in way I never tried before. Thanks.
Today I learned how to write a found poem. I used a book of tongue twisters from which I pulled out 10 lines. It turned out alright. It is different anyway. My students would probably enjoy doing this. I do think I will incorporate more writing this year. I am working on a list of writing prompts that uses their knowledge of science to write responses.
I found my stride today. My journal prompt at the beginning of the day was (in my opinion) very good. I used the Found poem in a different way than everyone else. I created a poem about finding a line for the poem instead of finding lines from other poems and using them to create a new poem. But I enjoyed myself today and I also have a jump drive today which is something I didn’t have with me before and it made me nervous to save things to the computer. I loved today. I was able to put a background into Word.
Today, I enjoyed writing the found poem yanking some lines from a book. This will be interesting to use in class. I also linked my powerpoint writing prompts to my website–YAY!! Again, it was good to have the time to work on projects that I will actually use and the brains of my colleagues to bounce ideas off of. Ideas seem to ignite more ideas with this bunch, and we are comfortable making suggestions, which I really like. I was impressed that we made found poems from so many different sources. Overall, another valuable class that will help me face the new year with more energy.
Found poems were new to me. I enjoyed the creative writing process and know that I can incorporate parts of this into my curriculum – even if the “found” words aren’t from a book (since I don’t use textbooks in two of my computer classes) but they could be from a Web site or something similar.
Thanks for introducing me to found poems. I will share it with our English/CA department.
